A geo conference is a rich and varied beast; it can range from a fully structured, plenary rich, corporate sales pitch, to an unstructured “let’s just slap it on the wall” unconference such as WhereCamp with all points in-between.

w3gconf will, naturally, tread a path in between these two outermost limits, though our heart will be more in the unconference camp if truth be told. But, regardless of theme and structure there are a number of truisms that you can apply to a geo conference:

… there will be wifi and no matter how robust, now matter how many DHCP leases, no matter what the bandwidth, it will crap out at some point; preferably within the first 5 minutes of the conference.
… there will be a back-channel of commentary, sniping remarks and gleefully pointing out when something’s gone wrong. It used to take place on IRC but nowadays seems to have transitioned onto Twitter, where there will be a short argument over which hashtag to use. Ours is #w3gconf before you ask, so no arguing at the back there.
… there will be a presention which induces cries of death by PowerPoint and my eyes are bleeding from the back-channel.

… there will be an unofficial game of buzzword bingo taking place.

All-Hands Buzzword Bingo

These truisms are tried and tested and pretty much guaranteed but w3gconf is a (vaguely) democratic process (at least for now) so in an effort to focus you all, we’ll be playing Geo Buzzword Bingo during the day.

This is where you come in.

We want to know what words or phrases need to be on the Buzzword Bingo sheet that you’ll find on your seat when you arrive at w3gconf; let’s get you started …

  • location
  • uniquitous
  • Foursquare
  • augmented reality
  • Google
  • OpenStreetMap

… but we’re sure you can do better, so add your suggestions in the comments and we’ll use the best on the day.

“crowd-sourced”

I dislike the term as it is often applied to Wikipedia and OpenStreetMap. It puts a focus on “sourcing” the data from the crowd as if by magic, rather than contributing together in a community.

But I’m sure this buzzword will crop up a lot. Actually the term fits pretty well for more exploitative commercial operations (google map maker)

I agree it’s one of the less lovely words but it’s out there, it’s used *a lot* and it covers a multitude of sins as, like location, is means different things to different people.

So crowd-sourced is in.
